Dr Barrington

Dr Barrington is a Lecturer in Water, Sanitation and Health in the School of Civil Engineering at University of Leeds, UK. She uses interactive methods to understand people’s experiences with drinking water, sanitation, menstrual health and hygiene, and rubbish management. Her participatory research and teaching focuses on ensuring that everyone has access to the products and facilities that they want to use, regardless of their income or the country they call home. She believes that there is more to well-being than economic development, and that although technology plays a crucial role, it alone cannot solve all of our water, sanitation and hygiene challenges. Dani was born and raised in Perth and previously worked with University of Western Australia, Murdoch University and Water Corporation.

Dr Bhakti Devi

Dr Bhakti Devi is Founder of " NEER Infinite" that focuses on supporting water users who are not connected to a centralized water system in becoming more sustainable and secure in their off grid water solutions. Trained as Civil & Environmental Engineer, Dr. Bhakti has a PhD in Urban Water and has been working as Water Professional for past 30 years. She started her career as process design engineer - designing rainwater harvesting and water & sewage treatment processes, then went on to create greater impact through leading the development and execution of the groundbreaking Decentralized Water Master Plan for City of Sydney. She also served as Liveability Strategist to assist Sydney Water build its organizational capacity for

innovative solutions and services such as Decentralised Water. Having worked 25 years of her professional life in Australia - one of the driest countries in the world, she has returned to India with the sole mission of helping existing & new buildings in Indian cities and towns become water secure.

Mark Ellery

Having spent the last decade working with the World Bank in South Asia, Mark Ellery is an independent water, sanitation and local governance consultant based in Western Australia. With more than 20 years of experience in the water sector, Mark has a good understanding of the application of policies, projects and behaviour change in low-income and high-income countries, in emergency response, reconstruction and development programmes.

Prof Eran Friedler

Professor  Eran Friedler is currently head of the Department of Environmental, Water and Agricultural Engineering at the Technion Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel. He is a member of several national steering committees on environmental regulation, science and education including the Urban Storm Water Harvesting group of the Joint Committee of Urban Drainage of IWA & IAHR, and an Associate Editor of Urban Water Journal. In 2017 he was chosen as an International Honorary Member of The American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists.
Friedler investigates and develops sustainable future urban water regimes and applied concepts for the establishment of an integrated urban water cycle where alternative water sources are interlaced with existing urban water and wastewater infrastructure. He is a co-author of "Greywater Reuse" (2015, CRC Press & IWA Publishing) and has authored more than 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals. In 2018 he co-chaired the IWA 15th Small Water & Wastewater and the 7th Resource Oriented Sanitation conferences, held in Haifa.

Prof Amit Gross

Prof. Amit Gross is a full professor and director of the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, which is part of the Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, Ben Gurion University of the Negev (BGU). His research interests include conversion of waste to resource by treatment and efficient use of marginal water and sludge. He also studies environmental risks associated with contaminated water resources and sludge (i.e. agricultural effluents, wastewater and contaminated groundwater). Prof. Gross’s current academic activities are focused on the use of greywater and wastewater for irrigation; the development of waste management practices for efficient reuse and minimization of environmental pollution; efficient use of saline water for aquaculture purposes; and treatment of aquaculture effluent in recirculating aquaculture and aquaponic systems.

Dr Shervin Hashemi

Dr Shervin Hashemi is a researcher working at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Seoul National University. His field of interest is developing and management of resource-oriented sanitation systems, as well as biochemical treatment of source-separated urine and feces, to be utilized as fertilizer. He is a member of the management committee of IWA Resources-Oriented Sanitation Specialist Group since 2017.

Dr Evina Katsou

Dr Evina Katsou is Associate Professor & the Course Director of the Water Engineering MSc at Brunel University, London. Dr Katsou is leading the Water Engineering group consisting of 8 PhD students and 5 post-doctoral students. Her research focuses on the development and application of novel physicochemical and biochemical processes/technologies for wastewater purification and valorisation. Dr Katsou has 70 publications, 10 book chapters, >90 presentations in international conferences/workshops. She has delivered >10 invited talks. Dr Katsou has one registered patent concerning the production of biopolymers within WWTPs. She is the PI of five H2020 and five UK National projects, Co-I to three H2020 projects. Evina is currently leading the WG (Transformation Tool) of the Cost Action CA17133. Dr Katsou is one of the founders of SATISTICA Ltd and she undertakes a wide range of consulting activities with contracts awarded from leading UK water industry partners, including Arup, SeverTrent, BuroHappold, Anglian Water, Affinity Water and International water companies

Brigadier Muhammad Aslam Khan

Brigadier Muhammad Aslam Khan (Retired) holds a unique blend of senior management experience and holds a MBA and a Master’s degree in Political Science.  He has diversified experience in water, development, energy and security sectors and held the positions of Chief Executive Officer in Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Director of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD), Senior Joint Secretary Political Affair’s at Prime Minister Secretariat, General Manager Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL) and as an Advisor with CDM Smith/CIDA and others.
The Brigadier established Gomal Damaan Area Water Partnership (GDAWP) and is currently  Chairman. He sits on various boards/committees as Director/Member and is Honorary Ambassador International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) for Water. His papers/articles are published in different magazines. Has senior position in Ruling Political Party (PTI). As a Chairman PEW he is highlighting major economic and water issues being faced by the country and their solutions.

Professor Pierre Mukheibir

Professor Pierre Mukheibir is a keen champion of integrated urban water planning, including water’s nexus with waste and energy. His academic focus is guided by his practical experience (while employed by water utilities) and the knowledge gained through his industry relevant research. Pierre is passionate about putting water at the centre of the urban planning landscape, rather than plumbing it in after the fact. He currently leads research on options analysis projects related to water supply and demand planning, including drought response strategies, and those that aim to improve the understanding of institutional issues for integrated green-grey (One Water) infrastructure. Incorporating uncertainty is a key skill that he brings to projects, as well as designing planning approaches that consider a systems focus. He has worked with the big utilities in Qld, NSW, Victoria, and internationally through WRF/WERF, on topics from the circular economy to creating organisation wide coherence in decision making processes. The outcomes of his research have been widely published in highly ranked academic and industry focused journals and he has developed a number of practitioner guidance materials to support planning and decision making for water utilities. His work has won industry awards for its practical relevance. Pierre currently leads ISF Water Futures team and is a professionally registered civil engineer with 25 years’ experience in the water sector.

Shinhi Kumokawa

Shinhi Kumokawa is director of Center for International Cooperation of Johkasou System, Japan Education Center of Environmental Sanitation (JECES). He received his doctoral degree at Tokyo University in 1991. He joined JECES in 1995 and conducts research in decentralized domestic wastewater treatment, organic waste recycling and treatment. He is involved in ISO TC224 activities on Basic On-site Domestic Wastewater Services, and is active in international cooperation with developing countries for sanitation improvement.

Dr Ashok Sharma

Dr Ashok Sharma is an Associate Professor Water Resources at Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia. He has 30 years of research, teaching and industrial experience on planning and design of centralised and decentralised water, wastewater and stormwater systems; integrated urban water management; and water sensitive urban design. Ashok has also worked at CSIRO, Australia, Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Queensland, Australia. He has co-authored 4 books, 11 book chapters, 70 journal and 69 conference publications, and 45 technical reports. He is a Fellow of Engineers Australia, CP Eng., and editor of IWA Journal of Water Supply and Technology-AQUA.

Dr Markus Starkl

Dr. Markus Starkl graduated from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna in the field of “Water Management, Environmental and Engineering Sciences” in 1998. In the course of his studies he also spent one year at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, where he pursued the MSc course Environmental Engineering. In 2009 he completed a short course in “Water and Environmental Law and Policy” at UNESCO-IHE (Delft). After working for three years in the water consulting sector he moved in 2001 to BOKU University. Since 2008 he has been working in the position of head of the working area “Assessment and Governance” at the Competence Centre for Decision Aid in Environmental Management at BOKU University. Since 2008 he is serving the Specialist Group of Sanitation and Water Management in Developing Countries of the International Water Association (IWA) in the position of co-Chair and Vice-Chair. In 2008 he has received the 1st runner up award for the Sustainability Prize in „Research excellence in support of sustainable urban water management” of the IWA, and in 2014 he received the “Raiffeisen Science and Innovation Award”. Over the last 15 years he has been developing, managing and coordinating several collaborative research projects in the water and sanitation field, mainly in Asia, and acted as expert/resource person/ consultant for various international organizations

Professor Dr. Joseph V Thanikal

Professor Dr. Joseph V Thanikal, is currently working as Associate Dean and Director of RICS School of Construction, Amity University, Noida, India. He has more than 32 years of academic and research experience in engineering and research institution. He has been consultant for industries and for many social organizations. He was awarded postdoctoral fellowship from 2003-2005, by Institute National de la Recherché Agronomique (INRA), France.

Dr Thanikal is a member of Canadian Council of Professional Engineers, Canadian Environmental practitioner in education and research by CECAB, Society of Chemical industry SCI. He is the Chair of Specialist Group Small Water and Wastewater Systems, Distinguished fellow and executive committee member of the IWA and life member of Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE).


He has to his credit: National award by the ISTE for Innovative research work in Engineering Patent for inventing procedure for “Method for purifying effluent in anaerobic fixed bed reactors using non-clogging support” and received research grant of more than 700,000 USD in various projects as principal investigator. He has research interest in wastewater treatment, waste management and construction management. He consulted and designed buildings and treatment plants and been involved in many community development projects.

Dr Miller Alonso Camargo Valero

Dr Miller Alonso Camargo Valero is a water@leeds Associate Professor of BioResource Systems in the School of Civil Engineering, University of Leeds (UK) and Chair of the IWA Specialist Group on Wastewater Pond Technology. Miller Alonso's academic career started at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogota (1997-2004) where he developed a deep knowledge in water and wastewater engineering in developing countries. His research there focused on the performance of algal-based wastewater pond systems at high altitude in the tropics.  In the UK (2004 - present), Miller Alonso's research work has been dedicated to study nitrogen transformation pathways and removal mechanisms in wastewater treatment systems and natural environments; to develop alga-based technologies to retrofit existing assets in the water industry to tackle greenhouse emissions, nutrient control/recovery and renewable energy generation; and the optimisation of the water, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles within processes aimed at dealing with waste streams through resource recovery routes.

Professor S Vigneswaran

Prof. S. Vigneswaran is currently Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and IT at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), Australia. He obtained his Doctor of Engineering and Dr.Sc from University of Montpellier and University of Toulouse respectively. During the last twenty five years, he has made significant contributions to the understanding of membrane systems in water reuse and desalination. He has several national and international projects in this area. He is a Fellow of the International Water Association. He is a committee member of the IWA’s specialist group on membrane technology and currently secretary of the rainwater harvesting group.

Professor Jan Vymazal

Professor Jan Vymazal graduated from the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague, Czech Republic  in 1980 and received the Ph.D. at ITC in 1985. Between 1985 and 1991 he was affiliated with Water Research Institute in Prague at the department of wastewater treatment. In 1991, Jan joined Duke University Wetland Center, North Carolina, USA as a visiting scholar. During his stay at Duke University until 1993 he focused on the wetland plant communities in Florida Everglades. Between 1994 and 2006 Jan worked as free lance researcher focusing mostly on constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. In 2007, he joined Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague. He is currently a head of Department of Applied Ecology and vice-rector for research and science. Jan has authored more than 130 papers indexed in Web of Sciences with over 6000 citations and H-index of 37. He wrote two books and edited nine books on natural and constructed wetlands. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Ecological Engineering.

Prof Tony Wong

Professor Tony Wong is Chief Executive of the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities in Australia. He pioneered the water sensitive cities approach for addressing the social, environmental and economic challenges of urban water management. Wong has advanced new understandings of the relationship between the societal and biophysical dimensions of water security and city waterscapes. In 2010 he received the prestigious Sir John Holland Award as Australia’s Civil Engineer of the Year, cited as having defined "a new paradigm for design of urban environments that blends creativity with technical and scientific rigour. A sequence of his achievements in Australia over the last 30 years in research and development, technology, urban design and policy has diffused globally, and increasingly amongst developing nations.” He was elected to the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in 2014, and in 2018, he won the IWA World Water Award.  

Dr Dharma Dharmabalan

Dr Dharma Dharmabalan has 40 years of experience in the Australian water industry and developing countries including 30 years in Australia with Barwon Water, Central Highlands Water, Coliban Water and currently 12 years at TasWater as General Manager. His early career qualifications and experience was at National Water Supply and Drainage Board in Sri Lanka, followed by postgraduate qualifications in Sri Lanka, the USA, Netherlands and Australia gaining a broad experience across a range of disciplines with specific leadership expertise in best practice operational methodologies, integrated business planning and enterprise based institutional management, especially to manage water infrastructure. He has been admitted as a Fellow of three world’s leading engineering institutions, in UK, US and Australia.

 Dharma is an adopter of innovative technologies and was the first to introduce the microfiltration in drinking water systems in Victoria, Australia in 1991. Since then he has undertaken numerous applied researches in the use of PP membranes which ultimately contributed to the development of pdf membranes currently used in the market. He was appointed to the Board as an inaugural director for the National Centre of Excellence in Desalination Australia, to provide guidance and direction in the adaptation and use of RO membranes at almost all the capital cities in Australia. Currently Dharma’s knowledge and skills in desalination is sought after by international organisations around the world. He is currently engaged as auditor of the Victorian Desalination Plant, Wonthaggi, to deliver safe drinking water of capacity 150 GL per annum, 85 Km of pipeline and power supplies to a over 5 Million people.

Dr Kathy Meney

Dr Kathy Meney is the Founder and Head of Syrinx Environmental PL which has become established as a leading green infrastructure and sustainable design company in Australia and overseas.  She is an internationally renowned and well-published multidisciplinary scientist and practitioner, with extensive experience in sustainable design, wetland design, integrated resource management, restoration ecology, environmental remediation and ecological engineering.  Kathy is well known for integrating and combining multiple disciplines to generate sustainable, appropriate and innovative solutions.  Her visionary and practical approach to problem solving and design has set the benchmark for ecological restoration and sustainability in Australia. Many of her projects have received international and national awards for innovation, crossing urban design, environmental, engineering and technical science categories.  Her specific expertise in systems ecology, plant physiology and in wetland systems has underpinned many green infrastructure, remediation, integrated water cycle management and biodiversity enhancement projects she has undertaken for Syrinx and in previous roles. In the water sector, Kathy’s experience includes expert advisory and vision keeping roles, alternative infrastructure strategies and decision tools, and the design and delivery of integrated stormwater and wastewater projects applying green infrastructure and water-sensitive city approaches.

Dr. Gayathri Naidu

Dr. Gayathri Naidu is presently a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellow in University of Technology Sydney and a core membrane of the Centre for Technology in Water and Wastewater, UTS. Her core research in the field of Environmental and Chemical Engineering encompasses designing, developing, optimizing and applying membrane technology and nanoparticles for seawater and wastewater remediation. Specifically, her research in seawater and wastewater is dedicated towards 3R’s: Remediation, Reuse and Recovery under the sustainable framework of water-energy nexus using membrane distillation and nanoparticle.

Jon Coetzee

Jon is a Chartered Professional Engineer (CP Eng) with a Business Management and Administration degree – experienced in Business Management, Sales & Marketing, Project & Design Management, Business Development and Operational/Resource Efficiency Improvement through Innovation. Jon managed engineering, operations and sales & marketing teams, and multidisciplinary projects and designs with major utilities and companies across the Water, Power, Dairy, Food & Beverage, Pharmaceutical, Oil & Gas, Mining, Defence, State and Local Government sectors.  Jon has 20+ years’ experience in the water industry in Australia and South Africa, previously with GHD, Schneider Electric and now Managing Director of Amiad Water Systems in Australia & NZ.
